The next Capcom Cup is going to have some major changes to its format. After the awards ceremony for this year’s Capcom Cup, an important announcement was made by Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono. It is going to be held in Paris, France, and here’s what is different.
How it works now is that instead of following the two previous formats, Capcom is adding eight extra qualifier spots as well as a split leaderboard. The split leaderboard includes two separate online competitions that will then lead to the Capcom Cup in Paris. Capcom’s Pro Tour season begins in March 2020 and will be played in Street Fighter V: Champion Edition. The game releases a month before the season begins in Brussels at the Brussels Challenge from March 20 to 22 in Evere, Germany. Competitors have a narrow window of time to get used to the new game before the competition begins.
With the format shift, points will be reset in July at the midway point of the season. A total of eight players from the global leaderboard will rise up before the reset, and then following the reset eight more will earn a spot. It seems it’s being done to even out the playing field to give everyone a chance to earn those coveted spots in hopes to go on to the Capcom Cup.
Evening out the playing field
Not only will those 16 players have that chance, but another 22 will also be chosen following unannounced local events happening in August titled World Warrior Challenges. To round out a total 40 spots, one spot is of course already claimed by this year’s Capcom Cup champion, Derek “iDom” Ruffin. And the final spot will be provided to the winner of the Last Chance Qualifier that is set to occur right before the Capcom Cup. Let us know in the comments what you think of these new changes.
