Garruk’s Uprising is an Uncommon enchantment that can be cast for 2 and a green, as revealed in Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2021 spoilers. It gives all of your creatures trample and lets you draw a card if you control a creature with 4 or more power when it enters the battlefield. While it is on the field, whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters the battlefield under your control, you may draw a card. The question remains: “Is this card good enough to play, or is it just another herald of Garruk’s return and nothing more?”

Uprising in Standard

Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2021 spoilers MTG Garruk's Uprising (M21) #186

Garruk’s Uprising will be competitively viable under one condition: if the format has a good Mono-Green Stompy shell. Garruk’s Uprising can generate incredible value in decks that play beefy creatures. The only question is if it is worth missing a 3-drop on turn 3 in order to play this card. On one hand, it is a great value engine that can give you that little bit of draw that you need. On the other hand, doing nothing to impact the game state on turn 3 might be too steep of a price for playing this card. This all depends on the shape of the meta at that time.

Viability in other formats

Garruk’s Uprising is just far too slow for the standards of Modern. It does far too little for 3 mana. In Legacy, however, it might find itself a home in Midrange, Reanimator, or Green Stompy decks. Being a bit slower than Modern, Legacy leaves more room for cards that aim to generate value over time and not off the bat.

When it comes to Commander, Garruk’s Wake will probably be played in most green decks. One would have to look really hard to find a green deck that does not drop huge bombs. Decks like these usually run cards like Garruk’s Wake that generate value from your swarming the board with creatures that have large power and toughness, and another one won’t hurt. The variant version of the card is gorgeous as well and will, without a doubt, be a great addition to any collection.
