Thursday, Wizards of the Coast released the latest card set for Magic: The Gathering. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty is a colorful, science fiction world featuring dragons, samurai, ninjas and more. The set launches Thursday on Magic: The Gathering Arena, and on Feb. 18 for tabletop.

Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty

Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty is inspired by feudal Japan. The plane was first seen in the original Kamigawa set back in 2004.  This new set contains contains 302 cards. Players will find the new set focuses on the cyber ninja Kaito Shizuki who’s searching for the missing emperor of Kamigawa. The set also features returning Planeswalkers: Tamiyo and The Wanderer. Since the events of the original Kamigawa story 1,200 years prior, new card mechanics have developed.

New mechanics

  • Reconfigure gives creatures the ability to equip themselves to other creatures. These will offer new bonuses.
  • Double-faced cards returns, and are the key to changing the battle. Sagas turn into enchantment creatures, offering new abilities.
  • Channel returns, and allows a player to discard a card and receive a temporary effect.
  • Ninjutsu returns, and allows Ninja creatures to be put into play already attacking. They can then return an unblocked creature to its owners hand

Iconic Japanese art available

The legendary creatures that first appeared in the original Kamigawa set are back. Spirit Dragons the highlight of the set with five to collect. Basic land cards are also getting a cool upgrade. Inspired by traditional Japanese iconography, there will be ten “Ukiyo-e” basic land cards to collect. These are available in two pieces of woodblock art, and both foil and non-foil versions.

Creature cards were drawn in an anime-like Japanese art-style. Cards are available with stylized borders too.

Augmented Reality

To celebrate the launch of the new card set, Wizards of the Coast released an augmented reality experience. This allows players and fans to explore the world of Kamigawa. Fans will need to open the website on a smartphone or tablet with a camera. Once the site is open, give it access to your camera and AR. Now you’ll be able to explore the world, throw some ninja stars, view cards in 3D and download wallpapers.
