The League of Legends European Championship summer split continues with a spicy week filled with non-stop action and long games. The LEC Week 2 saw Excel Esports look even more terrifying, plus some inconsistencies from top teams. The week also marked the end of G2’s undefeated streak in the LEC.

After Week 2 of the summer split, Excel sits at the top of the standings alongside G2 while Astralis, Rogue, MAD Lions and Fnatic share the third position.

With Week 2 of the LEC out of the way, here are three major notes heading into the third week.

Excel’s Korean boot camp buff is real

Not many would have guessed that after five games in the LEC summer split, Excel would be sitting pretty at the top, but here we are! Excel made the LEC playoffs for the first time ever in the spring, and look on track to continue the trend. The team spent the off-season in Korea, constantly playing scrims against some of the best teams in the world, and it looks to have paid off so far.

Excel came into the summer looking like a completely different team, despite keeping the same roster. Their early games and decisiveness in dives and team fights have set them apart from most of the other teams in the LEC summer split. After losing to G2 at the end of Week 1, it seemed like the boot camp buff was starting to wear off. However, their 21-minute win against in-form MAD Lions and remake game against Vitality shows that Excel are very much in the race for the top spot this summer — if they can maintain the consistency.

Same sad story for super-team Vitality

The story of super teams not working in League is something fans have become used to yet still tried by organizations. After a disappointing end to the spring split, it was only natural to expect Vitality to come out swinging in summer. Moreover, they swapped out their jungler, Oskar “Selfmade” Boderek for Worlds 2017 champion, Kang “Haru” Min-seun.

However, Vitality have continued in the same fashion as spring with decent early games and everything falling apart after that. With 13 games left to play, Vitality cannot afford to keep losing and falling apart at any slight hurdle.

Top 3 up for grabs more than ever in LEC summer

Even though it is still early into the split, the LEC summer split 2022 is on course to be one of the most competitive in LEC history. While G2 and Excel have performed better than other teams, the gap doesn’t seem too much. Moreover, with the top 6 teams all playing each other next week, all the top positions are up for grabs.

Heading into the summer split, many expected G2, Fnatic and Rogue to be the top three teams, with the others trying to keep up. However, things have not gone that way with the resurgence of MAD Lions, Astralis and Excel. With just three slots open to the LEC for the World Championship, all teams will have to fight harder than ever.

The LEC returns on July 1 at 12 PM ET with Misfits Gaming versus Team BDS as the opener.
