The DOTA 2 animated television series, “DOTA: Dragon’s Blood,” hits Netflix today, March 25. The series was announced back in February and will feature eight episodes inspired by the lore of the popular game.
The production is a joint venture between Valve, Netflix and the South Korean animation studio, Studio Mir. The studio is known for its animation on “The Legend of Korra” and “The Boondocks.” It also previously worked with Netflix on the animated series, “Voltron: Legendary Defender.”
“Fans will love how we’ve imagined the DOTA 2 universe and woven together an epic, emotional, and adult-oriented story about some of their favorite characters,” said Showrunner and Executive Producer, Ashley Edward Miller, in a press release by Netflix. “The cinematic animation, acting and music are simply next level and I’m grateful to Valve for supporting our creative ambitions.”
DOTA: Dragon’s Blood story
The story of “DOTA: Drangon’s Blood” follows Davion, a Dragon Knight who encounters an Elder Dragon that leaves him with a curse he must cure. Princess Mirana joins in on Davion’s journey while also searching for a stolen set of magical lotuses. The two pursue their quests while a conflict exists between Selemene, a moon goddess, and the followers of the goddess she overthrew.
The eight-episode series also features many Easter eggs and references to items from the DOTA universe. Several characters in the series are also from the game, albeit with slight changes made by the showrunners.
Netflix adaptations
Netlfix is no stranger to adaptations of video game series. The streaming platform previously released “Castlevania,” which loosely follows the Castlevania video game series and features many adult themes.
The company also reportedly has more video game adaptation in the works. The current list includes titles like “Tomb Raider,” “Diablo” and “Cuphead.”
